Admin Guide: Install single-node Interana on Azure

Microsoft Azure is a cloud source service where you can deploy and manage Interana clusters. You can create Azure Linux Virtual Machines on-demand for a scalable, secure Ubntu infrastructure for as many Interana clusters as needed.

This topic demonstrates how to create an Azure portal and Ubuntu Linux virtual machine (VM), on which you can then install an Interana single-node cluster.

You can use the process outlined in this topic for a multi-node Interana cluster by creating multiple VMs, and then following the install multi-node Interana instructions.

Complete the following tasks in the order listed:

  1. Log in to the Azure portal.
  2. Create an Ubuntu VM with Azure.
  3. Install Interana.

Before you begin

To complete this procedure, you must have an Azure subscription. If you don't already have a subscription, go to to set one up.

1. Log in to the Azure portal

The Azure portal provides a browser-based user interface for creating and configuring virtual machines, and their related resources.

You need an SSH key pair to complete this task. If you already have an SSH key pair, go directly to step 3.

To log in to the Azure portal, do the following:
  1. From a Bash shell, enter this command and follow the on-screen prompts.
ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048
  1. From the command output, copy the contents of the public key file to the clipboard.
  2. Log in to the Azure portal at

2. Create an Ubuntu VM with Azure

This section walks you through creating an Ubuntu virtual machine (VM) in Microsoft Azure from within the Gallery.

Provision your Azure VM with Ubuntu 14.04.x Interana requires Ubuntu 14.04.x to run successfully.

To create an Ubuntu VM with Azure, do the following:
  1. Log in to your Microsoft Azure account.
  2. Navigate to Data Services > Storage > Quick Create.
  3. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the Microsoft tutorial for creating a VM with Azure.

This tutorial uses Microsoft Service Manager. If you prefer, you can follow the instructions in the Resource Manager tutorial to create a VM in Azure

  1. Make a note of the IP address of the VM. You will need it when you install Interana.
  2. Continue with installing Interana.

3. Install Interana

You are now ready to install Interana on your Azure VM.

To install Interana, do the following:
  1. Verify that you have SSH connectivity with the Azure VM, with no TCP restrictions (such as iptables).
  2. Log into the VM.
  3. Follow the instruction for installing a single-node Interana, beginning with downloading the software.
